Gina teaches the company a new song for their mini-musical "Opening Night!"
Hello and Welcome!
Gina DeMetruis, MS Ed, BCBA LBA
Founder and Director of
Autism Community Theatre
I've been teaching theatre and special education in NYC public schools for over 20 years. I studied Applied Behavior Analysis at Hunter College and became a board certified behavior analyst in 2015.
While looking for recreational and therapeutic programs for my teenage son, it occurred to me that a well designed theatre program could address pivotal skills for teens with autism. These skills (including imitation, joint attention, following directions and communication skills) could then open the door to a host of other, untaught goodies - especially in the realm of social development.
While the underlying work is serious, the joy of the theater workshop comes from the caring of the Supporting Players and the spontaneous enthusiasm and personalities of the actors themselves.
